During May 2010 patients, clinicians and managers worked with David Powell, North Bristol NHS Trust’s Director of Capital Projects on clinical modelling for the new breast service for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

This involved helping to work out the flow of women and men with breast symptoms through clinics and the flow of women attending breast screening appointments when services are centralised at Southmead Hospital. The patient representatives are working hard to ensure that quality and safety of patient care is at the heart of the new service.

BUST has decided not to hold an October Ball this year. Instead we are having a Picnic in the Garden on 18th July 2010. Tickets £10 for adults and £5 for children under 16 can be obtained by phoning 01454 228498.

2011 is BUST’s 20th Anniversary. The Committee will soon be starting work to plan a really special event to mark the occasion.

So far this year we’ve spent a total of £116,000 on an ultrasound, a portable ultrasound, a Lipo Filler kit for use in reconstructive surgery to restore the appearance of the breast following some types of lumpectomy, and a high resolution ultrasound machine that can be used to view breast microcalcifications. Before this technology became available, they could only be detected by mammogram.

There’s lot’s happening for BUST at the moment. Members of the Committee are planning for the Ball at the Bristol Hotel (formerly Jury’s), Saturday 10th October. Tickets £35 per person or tables of 10 can be booked for £350.

The Breast Care Services Review is progressing well. A Stakeholders’ Workshop was run on 6th April by an Independent Facilitator and Clinicians and Patient and Public Stakeholders are working with NHS Bristol to develop an excellent model for future Breast Care Services for Bristol and Weston.

People regularly undertake challenges to raise money for us. You can read about them in Latest News on our home page

Our next blog will tell you about the equipment we’ve bought and we hope to have some pictures of it.

OK, it’s a while since we updated the blog. We’ve been busy.

The Breast Care Services Review continues with the NHS, clinicians and patient representatives working together to propose what the future service should look like. We hope that details can be made publicly available soon.

We have started to plan for our flagship fundraising event; the 2009 BUST Ball. To be held at the Bristol Hotel (formerly Jury’s) on Saturday 10th October 2009. We will post more details about it over the coming months. If you are interested in joining us for this sparkling event, please telephone or email us via our contact page

And we’ll be in touch with further details nearer the time.

BUST is in discussion with Mr Cawthorn and Mr Sahu about buying new equipment. We can’t say any more than that at the moment, but we hope to make some exciting announcements soon.

7th November 2008

On 5th November, BUST met with representatives of the Bristol Health Services Plan (BHSP) to review progress of the Breast Care Services Review.

The BHSP has produced a progress report that includes report on current status by BUST and a Patient Stakeholders’ Requirements Document that was produced in June 2008, following a meeting of local breast cancer groups and some patients unaffiliated to any groups. Click here to find the documents on the Bristol Council website
Scroll down to item 10, and click on Breast Care Services Review Update.

Two of the documents can also be downloaded from this website:

Bristol Health Scrutiny Commission will review the BHSP report during November. The Commission is a Local Authority Overview and Scrutiny Committee (OSC). They were formed by the Government in 2003 and given the power to scrutinise local health services. OSCs review both major changes and the ongoing operation and planning of services. Their aim is to make the NHS more publicly accountable and responsive to local communities.

North Somerset and South Gloucestershire also have OSCs and representatives from them meet with members of Bristol OSC to form the Joint Health Scrutiny Committee to review health matters affecting all three areas.

7th October 2008

Welcome to our Blog. We’ll use this to keep you informed of the work of BUST and how we are supporting the Frenchay Breast Care Centre.

We’ll also tell you about what we are doing to represent patient views in the Bristol Health Services Plan (BHSP) Review on the future of Breast Care Services for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

On 30th September, two members of the BUST Committee attended a workshop, organised by BHSP for non-NHS members of the Breast Care Review. It was a very helpful and informative meeting, with plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.
